Following an uninspiring loss to the Phillies earlier today, the Mets are set to call up infielder Mark Vientos and left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi and designate infielder Joey Wendle and right-handed pitcher Yohan Ramírez for assignment—all according to Joel Sherman.
Signed to a one-year deal in late November, Wendle was one of the first players brought into the organization under new president of baseball operations David Stearns. The move didn’t seem great at the time because of Wendle’s struggles at the plate in 2022 and 2023. In limited playing time with the Mets to start the 2024 season, Wendle has hit just .222/.243/.250 with a 45 wRC+.
Vientos has spent the vast majority of his season thus far in Triple-A Syracuse, and he’s hit .284/.376/.500 with six home runs there. In a brief major league call-up earlier this year to fill a roster spot while Starling Marte was on the bereavement list, he hit a walk-off home run and put up a .429/.429/.857 line in seven plate appearances.
Lucchesi hasn’t made a major league appearance yet this year, but he’s thrown 38.1 innings for Syracuse with a 2.58 ERA.
Ramírez made the Mets’ Opening Day roster, served a suspension for throwing at Rhys Hoskins, and was designated for assignment in early April before the Mets traded him to the Orioles for cash. In early May, the Mets claimed him off waivers from the Orioles, which combined with his second DFA makes him the second reliever to have been DFA’d twice by the Mets this season. In 14.1 innings with the Mets and Orioles, Ramírez has a 6.91 ERA and a 3.56 FIP.
