Bengals head coach explains why QB Joe Burrow was absent from OTA practice

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Joe Burrow was absent from the Bengals Organized Team Activities on Tuesday, and head coach Zac Taylor pointed the finger of blame at himself to setting off alarm bells.

Taylor wasn’t previously scheduled to talk to media on Tuesday, but said after the practice that the quarterback was given the day off after he threw on Monday and that it was part of the rehab process returning from wrist surgery.

“We’ve given Joe a day off every week. I didn’t time this up great,” said Taylor after practice. “I kinda thought (the media) were here (Monday)… he threw (Monday), so (Tuesday) is his day off.”

Taylor said Burrow, who was injured November 16 in a game at the Baltimore Ravens, did not ask for the day off and would throw again on Wednesday.

Burrow had attended all previous practices open to the media this offseason. Taylor said he is progressing well.

“Everything has been positive in those conversations we’ve had with his doctor,” said Taylor. “”He’s been great. Anytime you ask for feedback from him things are always going really well. I’ve just learned in dealing with these players for a long time now that when things are going good, that’s good, but let’s be smart.”

Jake Browning took first-team snaps on Tuesday.

Taylor said he isn’t sure what the plan for Burrow will be for next week’s mandatory three day mini-camp that runs Tuesday-Thursday.

“There’s some flexibility with one of the mini-camp days in terms of what we’re actually going to do,” said Taylor. “I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth.”

Receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins — who are both in search of new long-term contracts — as well as offensive lineman Trent Brown were also absent.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins was in attendance after not attending any of earlier offseason programs.

“”He’s been back since (Monday),” said Taylor. “It’s been good to get him out here and get him acclimated with how we do everything. He’s a pro, so he’s been doing a great job away from facility, so now it’s good to get him back in here for these last couple of weeks. There’s a reason you sign guys like that. He’s a pro. He knows how to get himself right. We’re happy to have him here and get him acclimated with our team.”
