Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is considered day-to-day after a CT scan revealed no fracture in his right hand, per SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino.
Alonso left Wednesday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch on the right hand by James Paxton. He went down after being struck by a 93 mph fastball and, after making his way down the first base line, quickly left the game alongside trainers
Manager Carlos Mendoza revealed after the game that X-rays came back clean but that the results of the CT scan would paint a more complete picture.
Brett Baty came into the game to pinch-run for Alonso and play third base, pushing Mark Vientos over to first.
Mendoza said he’s confident that Vientos can take over everyday first base duties for however long Alonso is out.
“I feel good [having him play first base],” Mendoza said of Vientos. “He’s played there before, he’s had reps and I feel comfortable if we need to. We have to wait for Pete first
So far this season, Alonso is slashing .231/.308/.453 with 12 home runs and 26 RBI.
Alonso said before Thursday’s game that his hand is “doing really well for what happened” and that he feels lucky to have “dodged a bullet” of a more serious injury
We got X-rays, bone scan and MRI, everything came out negative so no breaks or anything like that,” he said. “I’m just really happy that it’s just gonna be day-to-day… It could have been a lot worse, I’m just really happy I’m at where I’m at right now.”
Alonso said the ball caught him “right on the knuckle” of his middle finger and he is dealing with some swelling, but “it doesn’t necessarily hurt too badly.”
The first baseman added that he had not yet taken any swings – and was heading to the batting cage after he spoke with reporters – but he did participate in on-field infield practice.
Throwing, fielding, everything feels completely normal, which is awesome,” he said. “I’m gonna be taking some swings in the cage, I pretty much have the blessing ‘do your normal routine.’ Obviously just wanna take care of everything as much as possible, don’t wanna aggravate it too, too much.
