Tennis couples don’t get better or more iconic than Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf! A dominant presence at Wimbledon in the last two decades of the 20th century, the retired WTA player is getting lauded once again by her husband. Since the couple’s first meeting took place at Wimbledon in 1992, the Grass Slam holds a special place in both ex-players’ hearts. While in a rare appearance, Agassi attended the Gentlemen’s Singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, the Championships would be remiss without Steffi Graf.
While Agassi’s tally in the Grand Slam stands at 1 out of 8 slams, his wife won 7 Wimbledon trophies out of her 22 Grand Slam wins. And as this year’s finals weekend rolled around, the American subtly declared who the GOAT on grass really is.
This year’s title clash between Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova was a standing ovation kind of event, with Paolini losing out a second Slam in a row. But it made Agassi remember the OG WTA star – his wife. He adorably revealed Graf’s statistics in an Instagram post, where he shared a clip of searching Google for Steffi Graf’s Wimbledon career. Sharing a video of a screen recording on his Instagram page, the eight-time grand slam champion dropped a love emoji in the caption, expressing his immense pride for his wife’s tennis brilliance.
In 1992, they both won the singles titles in the men’s and women’s categories and met at the celebratory dinner, setting the tone for decades to come. Interestingly, it was also Wimbledon that inspired the idea of retirement for Graf, who emerged from a defeat against Lindsey Davenport in the 1999 Wimbledon finals.
“That moment came after Wimbledon, and, you know, it didn’t really hit me at one specific time. It just came gradually, when I started to get ready for the tournaments and I realized that, you know, I wasn’t really getting into it too much,” Graf said once. Following her statements, it wasn’t too hard to understand that this former German tennis legend had a soft spot for Wimbledon.
While she didn’t join her husband at the All England Club this year, Agassi was spotted with fellow retired tennis player, Justin Gimelstob. But it was his tribute to Graf that won fans over. After melting hearts with their love story for over a decade, the couple has made it eternal in an interesting way.
