Introducing the 2024 Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame Class
Indiana University (IU) Athletics has a storied tradition of excellence, producing some of the most remarkable athletes, coaches, and contributors in collegiate sports history. Each year, the university recognizes the best of the best by inducting a select group into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2024 class is no exception, featuring individuals who have left an indelible mark on their respective sports and on the university itself. As we proudly introduce this year’s inductees, we celebrate their extraordinary achievements and contributions to the legacy of IU Athletics.
The 2024 Hall of Fame class is composed of a diverse group of athletes and coaches who excelled in various sports, each bringing honor to Indiana University through their dedication, hard work, and exceptional performance.
One of the most iconic figures in Indiana basketball history, Steve Alford is synonymous with excellence on the court. A standout player during his time at IU, Alford led the Hoosiers to the 1987 NCAA Championship under the guidance of legendary coach Bob Knight. Known for his sharp shooting, leadership, and basketball IQ, Alford was a two-time All-American and remains one of the school’s all-time leading scorers. After his playing days, he went on to have a successful coaching career, further cementing his legacy in the sport.
Tracy Smith made his mark on IU baseball both as a player and as a coach. As the head coach of the Hoosiers from 2006 to 2014, Smith transformed the program into a national powerhouse. He led IU to its first-ever College World Series appearance in 2013 and earned multiple Coach of the Year honors. Smith’s impact on the program is immeasurable, as he helped put IU baseball on the map and inspired a new generation of players to strive for greatness.
Lilly King is one of the most dominant swimmers in NCAA history and a true ambassador for IU Athletics. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time NCAA champion, King set numerous records during her collegiate career at Indiana. Her relentless drive, competitive spirit, and commitment to clean sport made her a role model for athletes everywhere. King’s achievements in the pool have elevated IU’s swimming program to new heights and brought international recognition to the university.
Antwaan Randle El is widely regarded as one of the most electrifying players in college football history. A dynamic quarterback for the Hoosiers from 1998 to 2001, Randle El was a dual-threat athlete who could beat defenses with his arm and his legs. He became the first player in NCAA history to pass for over 6,000 yards and rush for over 3,000 yards in a career. Randle El’s versatility and playmaking ability set him apart, and he went on to have a successful career in the NFL, including winning a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Lin Loring’s name is synonymous with Indiana women’s tennis. As the head coach of the Hoosiers from 1977 to 2017, Loring built one of the most successful programs in the nation. Under his leadership, IU won 16 Big Ten championships and made 24 NCAA tournament appearances. Loring’s commitment to excellence and his ability to develop talent helped countless student-athletes reach their full potential, both on and off the court. His legacy is one of sustained success and unwavering dedication to the sport of tennis.
Janet Smith was a trailblazer for Indiana women’s basketball, helping to elevate the program to new heights during her time as a player in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A dominant force in the paint, Smith was known for her scoring ability, rebounding, and shot-blocking prowess. She earned All-Big Ten honors multiple times and remains one of the program’s all-time leaders in several statistical categories. Smith’s contributions to IU women’s basketball paved the way for future generations of players and set a standard of excellence that continues to this day.
