Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow has achieved enough in the sport to make his own decisions when it comes to preparation, but one of his methods has caught a lot of people by surprise.
He recently appeared on the ‘Pivot Podcast’ and he revealed that on the day of an NFL game, he does not allow his parents to come to his house at all. The unusual part is that he is close to his parents and generally they would always be welcome.
“Once Saturday hits, that’s a different Joe,” said Burrow.
“Now, I love my parents and want to be present with them, but when it’s time to get ready for a game, I might not be the most pleasant person to be around. I don’t have a lot of myself to give to anybody else, and so I want to go through my process.
“I want to go through my thoughts. I want to be alone with my thoughts and thinking about what I need to think about to go out and succeed on Sundays.”
Luckily for Burrows, his parents both come from a sporting background and therefore they understand his thought process and don’t take any offence to the banishment.
Burrows also talked about the struggles he had recovering from a wrist injury in the past and it made him switch up his training technique.
“At some point there’s some diminishing returns on the back end of that,” said Burrow on his hard training method. “And so that’s kind of what I realized this offseason, was, if my body is telling me, ‘Hey, you need a day.'”
