Yesterday, October 9, a cryptic social post sent the rumor mill into overdrive about legendary ski racer Lindsey Vonn’s possible comeback. In her Instagram post, Vonn stated that she had been having a great time being back in the mountains and that she was excited to share more news soon. Chatter had been heard in the lead-up from eyewitnesses who saw the 39-year-old retired ski racer training in both New Zealand and Austria.
Today, October 10, saw the Atomic Media Day in Salzburg, Austria, where the media had the opportunity to interview Atomic-sponsored athletes, including USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Brazil’s Lucas Braathen, and Italy’s Sofia Goggia. Goggia told Olympics.com at the Atomic Media Day that she was excited to see her idol possibly staging a comeback in the 2024-25 season, saying, “I also learned this news last night by reading the articles about it. A few rumors are going around, and there is a bit of gossip, but we’ll see. I say that who will live will see. It would be great to race in the World Cup with my idol.”
Goggia and Vonn have been close friends for several years, and the Italian ski racer admitted that they speak often. “She understands my state of mind. I think people who can understand what you’re experiencing the best are those who have been through the same things. When you’re talking to them about something, you speak the same language, and they understand quickly.” Both skiers have had a magnitude of injuries, and Goggia explained that Vonn had been incredibly supportive during her recovery from a recent leg fracture.
Mikaela Shiffrin was equally excited and supportive about a potential comeback of the 82-time World Cup winner, confirming in an interview with French newspaper Le Dauphine that she too had heard the rumors this week. “Wow! I heard about it like you on Tuesday. I don’t know more than you do, but I am intrigued. There are many returns this season. I wish her the best. It’s great news if she feels good and can come back. It is a sign that she is no longer suffering and that her body is okay, ” hinting at the retired ski racer’s recent knee replacement surgery.
Retired German ski racer Felix Neureuther, who now works as a TV commentator for German National TV, stated, “If someone can do the seemingly impossible, it is the incredible Lindsey Vonn!” We have reached out to Lindsey Vonn and her team for an interview and hope to report more as more information becomes available.
