Brent Venables may not need to look far for his next defensive coordinator at Oklahoma—he could have the solution right in front of him. With former co-defensive coordinator Zac Alley departing for a new role at West Virginia, the Sooners’ head coach now faces the challenge of filling a key position on his staff. But with the clock ticking on Venables’ tenure in Norman, could a decision to promote from within ultimately be his best—and perhaps safest—option?
Alley, who served as OU’s linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator, made waves by taking the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator position at West Virginia under Rich Rodriguez, marking a quick departure after just one season in Norman. His exit marks the second time this offseason that Venables has been forced to replace a coordinator—he previously fired offensive coordinator Seth Littrell midseason and hired Ben Arbuckle from Washington State.
However, Venables’ next move may be more localized. Known for his defensive expertise, Venables is deeply involved in overseeing the defense and has specific philosophies he wants to see implemented on that side of the ball. That focus might be why Alley chose to leave for a smaller program after only one year at Oklahoma. Those currently on the staff are already well-versed in Venables’ expectations, making internal candidates much more appealing.
As Venables enters a pivotal 2025 season, facing pressure to produce results or risk job security, an in-house hire could also help maintain stability within the defensive unit. With a defensive roster that has largely remained intact, continuity at the coordinator position could prove beneficial in keeping talent committed and on track.
If Venables does choose to promote from within, the Sooners have a couple of strong candidates. Todd Bates, who already holds the title of co-defensive coordinator and serves as defensive tackles coach, is one of Venables’ most trusted lieutenants. Bates has worked with Venables for over eight years, including stints at Clemson and Oklahoma, and is well-acquainted with Venables’ defensive philosophy.
Then there’s Brandon Hall, who, while not officially holding the title of defensive coordinator under Venables, has extensive experience on the defensive staff. Hall, who has coached safeties at Oklahoma since 2022, was previously a defensive coordinator at Troy and Jacksonville State, bringing a wealth of experience that could make him a strong candidate for the role.
As the coaching carousel continues to spin, Venables’ decision on whether to stay within the family or search elsewhere will be one of the most closely watched moves in Norman. The future of Oklahoma’s defense—and Venables’ job security—could depend on it.
