However, the recent birth of her first child, Conor Caldwell, has added a new dimension to her life, leading her to describe her experience as living a “double life.” For Caldwell, navigating her role as both a mother and a head coach has brought unique challenges and joys, reshaping her perspective on leadership, family, and basketball.
Caldwell and her husband, Justin, welcomed their son, Conor, just days before the Lady Vols faced one of their busiest stretches in the season. While some might have been overwhelmed by the timing, Caldwell took it in stride, fully embracing her new role as a mom while maintaining her commitment to her team.
“Becoming a mom is the most humbling and fulfilling experience I’ve ever had,” Caldwell shared during her first media appearance since giving birth. “It’s a joy that’s hard to put into words, but it also feels like my life has split into two equally important worlds—being a mom and being a coach.”
Caldwell’s days have become a balancing act, filled with diaper changes and late-night feedings on one side and game preparations and practices on the other. While the adjustment hasn’t been without its challenges, Caldwell approaches it with humor and determination.
“When I’m at home, it’s all about Conor—feeding him, rocking him to sleep, and soaking up every little moment,” she said. “Then, when I’m with the team, my focus shifts entirely to basketball. It’s like flipping a switch between two completely different roles, but both are so rewarding.”
The coach credits her support system for helping her manage this transition, particularly her husband, Justin, and her coaching staff.
“Justin has been incredible. He’s stepped up in every way possible, and I’m so grateful for him,” Caldwell said. “My staff has also been amazing. They’ve been supportive and understanding, which has made all the difference in balancing everything.”
Motherhood has given Caldwell a fresh perspective not only on life but also on coaching. She admits that her priorities have shifted and that she now sees her players in a different light.
“Becoming a mom has made me more empathetic and patient,” she explained. “I look at my players and think about their families, their goals, and the challenges they might be facing off the court. It’s deepened my connection with them and made me a better coach.”
Caldwell also shared that she hopes to set an example for her players, showing them that it’s possible to pursue their dreams while embracing the joys and responsibilities of life outside of basketball.
“I want them to see that you can have a fulfilling career and a family,” she said. “It’s not easy, but it’s worth every moment.”
Despite the new challenges, Caldwell remains focused on leading the Lady Vols through a promising season. She believes that her experiences as a new mom will only strengthen her ability to lead and inspire her team.
“This team is special, and I’m so proud of what we’re building here,” Caldwell said. “Having Conor in my life has given me even more motivation to give my best every day, both as a mom and as a coach.”
