Yolett McPhee-McCuin, affectionately known as “Coach Yo,” has been at the helm of the Ole Miss women’s basketball program since 2018. Her tenure has been marked by a transformative journey, leading the team from a challenging period to notable successes on the court. Despite these achievements, much of her impactful work occurs behind the scenes, often going unrecognized by the broader public.
Upon her arrival, Coach Yo inherited a program that had concluded the 2017–18 season with a 12–19 record, including a disheartening 1–15 in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play. Undeterred, she embarked on a mission to rebuild the team’s culture and performance. Her initial seasons were focused on laying a strong foundation, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
The 2020–21 season marked a turning point. The Rebels finished with a 15–12 record and were runners-up in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. This resurgence was a testament to Coach Yo’s strategic vision and the players’ commitment to her philosophy.
Building on this momentum, the 2021–22 season saw the Rebels achieve a 23–9 record, culminating in their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007. This accomplishment not only signaled the program’s revival but also highlighted Coach Yo’s ability to develop talent, as evidenced by Shakira Austin being selected third overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft.
The following season, 2022–23, was historic. The Rebels secured a 25–8 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007, highlighted by a stunning upset over No. 1 seed Stanford. This victory underscored the team’s growth and Coach Yo’s prowess in game preparation and motivation.
Beyond the court, Coach Yo’s contributions have been profound yet understated. She has been deeply involved in community service, mentoring young athletes, and promoting educational initiatives. Her commitment to philanthropy was recognized on August 29, 2024, when she received the Emerging Young Philanthropist Award from the Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy.
This award highlighted her dedication to service, a facet of her career that often operates away from the spotlight. Coach Yo’s holistic approach to coaching encompasses not only athletic development but also personal growth, academic achievement, and community engagement.
Despite these multifaceted contributions, much of Coach Yo’s work remains unheralded. Her focus has consistently been on the betterment of her players and the community, rather than seeking personal accolades. This humility and dedication have endeared her to those who are aware of her efforts, particularly the students she mentors.
In recognition of her unwavering commitment, the student body has shown their appreciation in various ways. Their gestures reflect a deep respect and gratitude for a coach who has given so much to the university community.
