Few college football programs take special teams as seriously as South Carolina, and that reputation has been a point of pride for Kai Kroeger throughout his career. The Gamecocks’ star punter, who has been one of the nation’s best at his position, recently competed in the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he had the opportunity to meet with NFL teams.
During those conversations, one topic kept coming up: South Carolina’s dominance on special teams.
South Carolina’s Special Teams Standard
Under head coach Shane Beamer, South Carolina has built one of the strongest special teams units in the country. From blocked punts to explosive returns, the Gamecocks consistently make game-changing plays in the third phase of the game.
Kroeger, who was a Ray Guy Award finalist and one of the most reliable punters in the nation, played a pivotal role in that success. But it wasn’t just his individual talent that stood out to NFL scouts—it was the overall culture of excellence on special teams that South Carolina has built.
“A lot of teams talked about it,” Kroeger said. “South Carolina has built a reputation for special teams, and that’s something I’m proud of.”
How Special Teams Became a Strength for the Gamecocks
South Carolina’s emphasis on special teams isn’t an accident. Under special teams coordinator Pete Lembo, the unit has produced:
- Multiple blocked punts and kicks over the past few seasons.
- Elite returners who have shifted momentum in big games.
- One of the most consistent punting and kicking units in the country.
This has helped South Carolina not only stay competitive in the SEC, but also pull off major upsets, including back-to-back wins over Tennessee and Clemson in 2022, where special teams played a key role.
NFL Teams Take Notice
With special teams being such a crucial part of the NFL, Kroeger’s ability to come from a program that prioritizes it has made him an attractive prospect. His strong leg, accuracy, and ability to pin teams deep are valuable assets, and teams know he comes from a system that demands excellence.
“Special teams can win or lose you games,” Kroeger noted. “South Carolina takes it seriously, and I think that shows when guys like me go to the next level.”
As he prepares for the NFL Draft, Kroeger’s performance at the East-West Shrine Bowl and his connection to South Carolina’s elite special teams culture will only boost his stock.
The Gamecock Legacy on Special Teams Lives On
With Kroeger moving on to the next chapter of his career, South Carolina will look to continue its dominance on special teams. Under Beamer and Lembo, the program has established itself as a place where special teams matter—and where players like Kroeger can thrive and earn NFL opportunities.
For now, Kai Kroeger is proud to carry that reputation with him, and NFL teams are taking notice.
