Philadelphia’s beloved mascots took a heartwarming break from their sports duties to pay a special visit to the Delaware Valley Veterans Home. The five iconic mascots, including Gritty and the Phanatic, made this visit in collaboration with the state Department of Veterans Affairs to honor deserving veterans.
The Delaware Valley Veterans Home holds residents who have served in various wartime eras, from World War II and the Korean War to the Vietnam War. These heroes were recognized for their dedicated service, bringing a sense of honor and pride to their lives.
Among the honorees was 87-year-old Lou Isern, a Vietnam War veteran who served for four years in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Senior Airman. This recognition held immense significance for veterans like Lou, as it acknowledged their sacrifices and contributions to the nation.
In addition to Lou Isern, four other veterans received this heartfelt tribute, surrounded by their family members and friends. The event marked a meaningful moment for these veterans who have longed for more interactions after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the mascots, Phang, represents the Philadelphia Union and soccer, a sport that Lou Isern developed a deep passion for during his time in England. He was excited to share his love for soccer and the Premier League. This special day brought a delightful surprise for Lou as he was gifted his very own soccer jersey, representing the beautiful game he cherishes.
The heartwarming visit by the mascots was a prelude to the Philadelphia Veterans Parade and Festival scheduled for the coming weekend, offering a wonderful start to a weekend dedicated to honoring the brave veterans of Philadelphia.
