Army Extends Coach Jeff Monken’s Contract Through 2027, AP Source Confirms

Army has extended the contract of its head football coach, Jeff Monken, through the 2027 season. The deal, which was confirmed by an AP source, will pay Monken more than $2 million per year. This extension marks a significant commitment by the school to Monken, who has been the head coach since 2014 and has led the Black Knights to five winning seasons, including back-to-back double-digit win campaigns in 2017 and 2018.

Monken’s tenure at Army has been marked by a strong record against rival teams, including five victories against Navy and four against Air Force. He has also led the team to four bowl game victories and has the best record among the service academies since 2017[3]. The coach has been praised for his dedication to the holistic development of his players, and his commitment to the program has been recognized by the school’s athletic director, Mike Buddie, who stated, “No coach in college football embodies the spirit of their institution more than Jeff Monken. His dedication to the holistic development of young men is authentic and impactful, and I am delighted that he will continue to mentor, train, and inspire our cadets while leading them to football victories”.

The timing of Monken’s contract extension coincides with potential discussions between Army and the American Athletic Conference (AAC) regarding the school’s potential membership in the conference as a football-only member. If Army joins the AAC, it would replace SMU, which is set to join the ACC in 2024. This move would add a new dimension to the historic Army-Navy game, as Navy is already a member of the AAC.

Monken’s contract extension is a significant step forward for the program, as it demonstrates the school’s commitment to its current leadership and its vision for the future. The coach has been instrumental in shaping the program’s identity and has led the team to a level of success that has not been seen in decades. With this extension, Monken will continue to lead the Black Knights through the 2027 season, and his legacy will be cemented as one of the most successful coaches in Army football history.
