It is rare for players to move from FC Barcelona to Real Madrid or vice versa. That does not mean that there have been no such cases over the years though. Of course, the most famous is that of Luis Figo. That transfer is talked about to this day and has had entire shows dedicated to it. Could we witness something similar in the future?
Real Madrid have mostly moved away from paying astronomical transfer fees in recent years, instead focusing on finding the next big thing. They are not opposed to bringing high-profile players to the club as free agents though.
Just this summer, we saw Kylian Mbappe join Real Madrid after his PSG contract ran out. It is also rare for arguably the best player in the world to move as a free agent but with the changing economic landscape of the game and the incentive of such moves, we can see it become more common in the future.
The player in question is Frenkie de Jong. As reported by Real Madrid Exclusivo, Real Madrid have his name on the list of possible replacements for Toni Kroos.
For now, we would take that piece of news with a pinch of salt. There is no doubt that De Jong is a good player and Barcelona have probably not made the most of his talents.
But there would be plenty of hurdles for Real Madrid when it comes to signing the Dutchman, whether as a free agent in the future or by paying a transfer fee. Let’s see how this situation develops.
Do not expect to see De Jong in a Real Madrid shirt. But at the same time, they would have said the same thing about Figo at one point in time. Never say never in football.
