In a heartfelt farewell, Mike Ekeler, Tennessee’s special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach, announced his departure from the Volunteers to join Matt Rhule’s staff at Nebraska. Ekeler, a Nebraska native, expressed deep gratitude to the Tennessee community, highlighting his time in Knoxville as a pinnacle in his coaching career.
Ekeler took to social media to convey his appreciation, stating, “THANK YOU VOL Nation, players & staff. It’s been an amazing 4 years filled with incredible memories! My family doesn’t have words to express our gratitude. I’m proud of the INCREDIBLE specialist & OLB rooms we’ve built for a bright future @Vol_Football.”
Reflecting on his tenure at Tennessee, Ekeler emphasized the unparalleled atmosphere at Neyland Stadium. During a segment on “Vol Calls,” he remarked, “I mean, that stadium, that environment in Neyland Stadium, is absolutely incredible.” He further noted the significant impact this environment had on recruiting, with numerous recruits leaving games impressed by the experience.
Ekeler’s coaching journey is marked by extensive experience across various programs. Before his stint at Tennessee, he served as the special teams coordinator at North Texas in 2020 and held positions at Kansas, North Carolina, and Georgia, among others. His return to Nebraska marks a homecoming, as he previously coached the Cornhuskers’ linebackers from 2008 to 2010.
During his time with the Volunteers, Ekeler made significant contributions to both the special teams and the development of the outside linebackers. Under his guidance, players like Velus Jones Jr. and Byron Young achieved notable success. Jones Jr. led the SEC in punt return average and was recognized as a first-team All-SEC selection, while Young became a first-team All-SEC recipient in 2022 and was subsequently drafted by the Los Angeles Rams.
Ekeler’s departure leaves a notable void in Tennessee’s coaching staff. His passion, energy, and commitment to excellence have left an indelible mark on the program. As he transitions to his new role at Nebraska, the Tennessee community wishes him continued success and acknowledges the lasting impact of his contributions during his tenure.
