Former Championship Winning Coach Offers Darkhorse Projection For Tennessee Football and Nico Iamaleava

In a recent episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, former championship-winning coach Urban Meyer identified the Tennessee Volunteers as his “dark horse” candidate for the 2025 College Football National Championship. Central to Meyer’s optimism is sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava, whose physical abilities have drawn significant attention.

Reflecting on Iamaleava’s performance, Meyer remarked, “I remember when I first started studying them last year, I called Brady Quinn and Matt Leinart and said, ‘What am I missing here? This guy looks like Aaron Rodgers. The ball comes out of his hand like a tennis ball.'” Meyer acknowledged that while Iamaleava displayed moments of inconsistency during his freshman year, the team’s overall performance remained strong. He emphasized that if Iamaleava continues to develop, he envisions a promising future for both the quarterback and the Volunteers.

Iamaleava’s freshman season was marked by impressive statistics, including 2,616 passing yards, a 63.8% completion rate, 19 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Tennessee to a 10-3 record and their inaugural College Football Playoff appearance in 2024.

Under the guidance of head coach Josh Heupel, the Volunteers have experienced a resurgence. Heupel’s offensive strategies have revitalized Tennessee’s gameplay, making them a formidable presence in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The team’s upward trajectory has not only energized the fan base but has also caught the attention of national analysts.

Meyer’s endorsement underscores the potential he sees in Tennessee’s program. He stated, “If that kid grows as a quarterback… I saw him as a high first-round draft pick. Now, it remains to be seen, but I’ll pick Tennessee.”

The Volunteers’ 2025 schedule presents both challenges and opportunities. Key matchups against SEC powerhouses like Alabama and Georgia will be pivotal in determining their championship aspirations. However, with Iamaleava’s continued development and Heupel’s strategic acumen, Tennessee is well-positioned to make a significant impact.

Urban Meyer’s projection adds to the growing anticipation surrounding Tennessee football. As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Knoxville to see if the Volunteers can fulfill this potential and emerge as national contenders.
